More and more people are taking advantage of sedation dentistry to have various dental procedures performed. Sedation dentistry is great for helping people that have a fear of the dentist and having dental procedures performed, as well as for people that require lengthy dental procedures.

If you are in need of dental work, but are uncomfortable with going to the dentist, sedation dentistry might be a good choice for you. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about sedation dentistry, and how it can help you.

What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a medical process that uses sedation to relax and sedate a patient while they receive their dental procedures.

What kind of sedatives are used?
There are various types of sedatives that can be used for sedation dentistry. Anti-anxiety medications, nitrous oxide, and tranquillizers are the most commonly used forms of sedation. These sedatives can be distributed via pill or intravenously, depending on the method the dentist prefers and what type of sedation they think will work best for you.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?
There are many different benefits to using sedation dentistry when you are having a dental procedure performed. By using sedation, the patient is unlikely to become stressed and uncomfortable during a long procedure. If they have a fear of the dentist, it will keep them from having anxiety and panic attacks while the procedure is being performed. With sedation dentistry, the patient is virtually unaware of the procedure, and to them, the procedure will feel like it only took minutes.

Is sedation dentistry safe?
Any type of sedation does require some risk. However, the occurrences of complications occurring a sedation dentistry procedure are very slim. If you have ever had any difficulties with sedation, you will need to inform your dentist so he or she can choose a method of sedation that is suitable for you. Additionally, make sure that the dentist has proper experience with administering sedation, which will further help to eliminate any risk.

Will someone have to be with me if I am getting sedation surgery?
You will definitely need to have someone with you that can drive you home and care for you after your dental procedure if you have been given sedation. Depending on the type of sedation that you are given, it can take approximately 4-6 hours for the affects of the sedation to wear off, during which time you should not drive and have someone supervising you.

How much does sedation dentistry cost?
Sedation for a dental procedure can start at about $200 and go considerably higher depending on the number of procedures that have to be performed. Some forms of sedation, such as general anesthesia or intravenous sedation that must be given to a patient by an anesthesiologist may be charged by the hour. Other methods of sedation such as pills or syringe injection will generally only be one set fee. Usually, the sedation fees will be charged separately from your dental procedure. If you will be paying for your procedure with dental insurance, you should first check with your insurance company, because many companies will not pay for you to be sedated.
